How to Avoid Being Scammed

The Trading Post is the ONLY secure place to exchange items. If you are feeling generous, then use the Money Tree where there are many needy people looking for donations.

Nobody can increase your pet's level, strength or any other attributes, no matter what they tell you. You must do the Faerie Quests, go to the Training School, or feed your pet special neggs from the Neggery if you want your pet to advance.

Those 'Make NP Fast' posts are almost always scams as are many shop contests. Contests are now illegal on NeoPets as a result of all the shop scams. Enter them at the risk of losing your account.

Anytime you see a post or neomail that says "I will help you or tell you a 'secret' if you give me a rare item", ignore them. These are what is called as a Pyramid Scam and you could have your account frozen for participating in it. Most neopians will help you for free.

Do not ask people to share an account with you, or offer to share yours. Do not ask or offer passwords either. This almost ALWAYS winds up with someone losing items or NP.

Don't be greedy - If something looks too good to be true, chances are it is. There are no secret codes to become rich over night, there is no magic web page that gives you 1 million neopoints and fish neggs cannot be made by anything. Nobody has ever cracked, hacked, broken into or tricked NeoPets and no one will EVER be selling Faeries for 10NP. If someone ever asks you to give them something, or buy something from their shop in return for something else, do not give it to them. There is no guarantee you will get anything in return. Instead, use the Neopets Automatic Submission Form - Abuse Report and they will stop them scamming anybody else.

Multiple Accounts

Most information is found in the New Features (NEWS) of Neopets or from the Neopian Times. I searched and came up with ALL they had on having mutiple accounts and placed it here for all you needs.

2001
September 17th
IMPORTANT : Please do not create multiple accounts in order to gain Neopoints, items or inflate Guild membership. We are tracking this and if we find people doing it, every single account you have will be frozen. It not only ruins the game for everybody, it wastes space in our database and causes the site to be slow. We do not mind if people have 4 or 5 accounts if they want more than 4 Neopets, or use them for storage or a gallery, but that is the limit.

October 29th
IMPORTANT - Please please please please only use one account per person to play our tombola, kiosk, wheel of excitement, shrine, fruit machine, and wheel of mediocrity games. Creating multiple accounts to play these games just to get Neopoints and items is not allowed, and we will freeze all the accounts of anybody we see doing it. It unbalances the game, and makes it unfair for other players. Once again, Neopets is not about how many accounts you can create.
We do allow you to have more than one account, but only if they are used for a reason other than simply getting more NP. Guild accounts, gallery accounts, and a couple of storage accounts are fine, within reason, however people using huge numbers of accounts to get rich will be frozen!

2002
January 7th
Just a quick warning, we are getting VERY strict with multiple accounts. We will freeze anybody who creates multiple accounts in order to gain a financial ( neopoint ) advantage over others. Basically, if you have a couple of extra accounts to store neopets, or items, or a guild that is fine. However, if you log into multiple accounts on a daily basis and use the shrine, tombola etc.. to get neopoints... then wave bye-bye to ALL your accounts.
Just to re-iterate, creating multiple accounts to gain extra neopoints with is NOT allowed. It is unfair to people who play by the rules, and heavily scorned upon by the Neopets Team. Please don't do it, and when your accounts are frozen please dont email us asking for them back, because they will never be unfrozen.

September 23rd
NOTE : Just a quick reminder to not use multiple accounts!! Our rule is one main account per person, and a couple of others (maximum of four) for galleries, guilds and the like. If you are logging on and visiting the snowager with 28 accounts then don't be suprised when all your accounts get frozen. You should only use one account to earn Neopoints with.
23rd December
A lot of people have been using multiple accounts to visit the advent calendar, shrine, fruit machine etc... Please do not do this, you are limited to one account per person for the daily freebies. Anybody using multiple accounts will have all their accounts permanently frozen. We are really serious about this!

Multiple Account Clarification
Many people seem to be confused about the multiple accounts rule so we thought we would try to clear things up. You are allowed to have up to five accounts, but you cannot use them to gain an unfair advantage over other users (ie. playing Flash Games or Restocking). The extra accounts are to be used only for non-Neopoint making activities such as posting boards, making galleries or storage accounts. If you are found to be doing this, you will be warned, and very likely frozen.

The Neopian Times Week 73
Is it against the rules to use multiple accounts to do Snow Faerie Quests if you didn't create them just for that purpose?
Yes, using anything that is meant to be played once a day (such as the Snow Faerie Quests, Tombola etc) with more than one account is against our rules and you could be frozen for it.
The Neopian Times Week 17
Warning
This is a gentle reminder to all those out there who may be less than honest. Neopets is not about who can have the most accounts, anyone we using multiple accounts to cheat anything will have all their accounts frozen. This includes the Advent calendar!
The Neopian Times Week 9
What is considered too many accounts?
If you have more than five accounts that you only use to collect and transfer neopoints (i.e you don't look after your pets, don't play any games, don't have a shop etc), that is considered too many accounts.
If you have several accounts, but your Neopets are all well fed, trained and you actively use them all, we will not freeze your account for having multiple accounts. We are only cracking down on cheaters, not dedicated players.

Vol 2 Issue 65
My whole family uses the same computer to play Neopets and we have an account each, will we be frozen for having multiple accounts?
No, you will only be frozen if you are creating multiple accounts to try to cheat our games, sponsors, etc. If you are using all your accounts and are sticking to the Rules of the site, you have nothing to worry about

Help! My sister and I used the same email address to make our accounts, and we use the same computer to play on them. My mum uses this computer, too. My sister and I don't want our accounts to get frozen because of the same email address thing! *cries hysterically* What do you suggest o wise one?!
Don't worry! You can change your email address by going to preferences via the help link, then selecting email preferences. If both of you are under 13 with no parental permission, you can change it once one of you turns 13.

Issue: 219
A few of my friends who are not able to get on Neopets every day have asked me to get on their accounts and get their advent calendar prizes for them. I've been doing it, but I'm terrified that I'll get myself, and all my friends, frozen for "having multiple accounts". Can you assure me that you have a way to know that I'm not on multiple accounts? ~ [removed]
Whoa whoa. Yeah, stop now. PUT THE MOUSE DOWN!

You CANNOT log into another user's account to play Neopets for them, and getting someone their dailies (including Advent) is indeed playing the site. It's not the multiple account thing you have to worry about... you're all cheating and that's definitely not allowed. They're cheating by asking you to play for them and giving you their account information, and you're cheating by playing the site for someone else. Tell your friends to stop being slackers and get their own freebies, and for Fyora's sake, stay out of their accounts so you don't get frozen.

Issue: 220
16th day of Celebrating, Y7
The other day, I was logged onto my spare account and I got a random event telling me I had been given a book from a traveling book shop. I was wondering, is it against the rules to send this item to my main account?
Nope. :) Anything won from a random event is yours to keep, and since you obviously can't have a shop on your alternate account, it's perfectly alright to send it to your main to sell it if you wish. (Or read it to a pet or whatever you wish.) This is quite different from doing dailies and getting freebies on alternate accounts, which isn't allowed.

Issue: 233
31st day of Running, Y8
Will I or my brothers and sisters get in trouble if our accounts use the same e-mail address? And does it count as account sharing? Because we aren't sharing, we just have accounts with the same e-mail because only one of us has e-mail. Also, are all of us in danger of getting frozen if one of us (say, my evil brother) gets frozen? ~mememe939
If you play on your own without your parents' help (we're too lazy to look up your age!), then your accounts should have separate email addresses. If one of you is frozen for doing something inappropriate enough to warrant all your accounts being frozen (such as scamming), then your accounts would be linked by email and would be frozen as well. :( Please ask your parents if they can set up an email account just for you. There are many free email sites, and it just takes minutes to sign up.

Parents who monitor their young children while playing Neopets may set a shared email address, since they are the ones taking responsibility for what happens in those accounts.

Issue: 266
17th day of Storing, Y8
I am going to word this as simply as I can since you are probably sick of these questions, but here is goes: can I play Tombola on my secondary account if I did not play it on my main for that day? Like alternating as long as I am not transferring the Neopoints. I would still be within the "Once Per Day" rule. So I guess I just want to know can I alternate days to grow my secondary account and for those purposes only? ~Anonymous
Please play the Tombola on your main account, and send any items you won to your side account if you wish to develop that account as well. Though if you want the profit from the item, please sell it in your main shop, then send those Neopoints to your side account via the Auctions or Trading Post. Your side account should only receive items or Neopoints directly from your main account or via Random Events you happened to get while logged in to that account. Thanks. :)

Hi,

You can play games on each account but you cannot send them all to one
main account. If you choose to not just do the freebies on just the
main account, you can alternate day on the accounts. And yes, we will know
if you don't alternate. We have ways to track you ;)

If you have any other questions, don't forget to include the entire
text of this e-mail with your username clearly at the top. This will help
me better address your situation.

Hi,

Your main account must be the only account you use for daily gaining activities such as flash games, Tombola, Shrine, Fruit Machine, Snowager, Kiosk, Mystery Pic etc...
You may have up to 4 other accounts for guilds, galleries, storage, and extra neopets (which we hope are fed on a daily basis!)

You are allowed to have up to 5 accounts if you want to own more than 4 Neopets or run a gallery, guild, or a second shop, but freebies that give out prizes like Tombola and the Shrine can only be used once per person, regardless of how many accounts you have. So just alternate between accounts each day you use the freebies. You may switch items between accounts once in a while, just do not turn your second account into an account that gains NeoPoints for your main account. You may also play games for NeoPoints, use the Healing Springs and get omelettes on the other accounts as long as you keep them in that account.

We do not mind if you use your other 4 accounts to gain Neopoints via your Shop (do not restock regularly thought), or the Trading Post, as these Neopoints do not come out of thin air, they require you to actually be selling items.

If you already have more than 4 accounts, but do not use them to make Neopoints, don't worry thats fine - just please don't create any more.
Thanks for playing Neopets, and we hope you understand that we make these rules to make Neopia a fairer, and a more exciting place for everybody!

If you have any other questions, don't forget to include the entire
text of this e-mail with your username clearly at the top. This will help
me better address your situation.

Common Scams
These are some of the most common scams on NeoPets.
Whenever you see one, be sure to copy and paste the scam into the
"Additional comments or more specific information may be entered here"
of the Neopets Automatic Submission Form - Abuse Report

Pyramid Scams
- Occasionally you will find a shop, user profile, or neomail with the promise of a "secret way to earn lots of neopoints". All you have to do is send them an item or buy an overpriced item from their shop and they will send you the information. They almost always include a phrase about being scammed before, so they know how it feels and would never scam anyone else. Don't believe them. The "secret" they tell you is to copy their shop description, user profile information, or neomail and do the same thing they are doing. Never send/buy items in exchange for information. It's never worth the price you pay. CLICK HERE FOR EXAMPLE OF WHAT ONE LOOKS LIKE !

"Change your e-mail to this..."
- Anyone who asks you to change your e-mail info is scamming you. If you change your e-mail to the address given to you by the scammer, it means that the scammer can then enter your username into the "forgotten password" box and have your password sent to them. Once they do that, they can enter your account and lock you out. Many free e-mail sites do have security issues and it is wise to change your password frequently and choose a combination of letters and numbers.
"Second Veriation to E-Mail scam" - They will get your E-Mail address and send you an E-mail telling you have been reported or hacked and they need you fill out a form to verify that it is truely your account. NeoPets will never have need to ask you for your pasword, or your help in a matter that a staff member can do which they pay them for anyways. CLICK HERE FOR EXAMPLE

NP/Item Generators
- These scammers will actually try to make you believe they have this magical program to put np in your bank account or items in your safety deposit box. They claim they will need your password to make it work, or they will tell you that you have to change your e-mail to the one on their site. There are NO np/item generators or "special codes". CLICK HERE FOR EXAMPLE

The Report Shop Button - I keep telling you, how good it is to report those hackers and scammers, but sometimes they've even tricked that button!
When you click on it to report another one of those nasty hackers/scammers, you mostly just report them, but some hackers/scammers have changed the button that as you click on it, it will take you to a fake login page. DONT TRY TO LOGIN!
Go back to neopets and instead of using the report shop button, write a letter to abuse@neopets.com, telling them what is wrong with the shop.

Chain Letters - These usually start out with either really good or really bad news that "it is very important you share." They promise rewards if you forward it to several people and they claim to be from the neopets team. The news they want you to pass on is not true, and you will not receive anything for forwarding it to anyone. Forwarding these neomails really slows down the servers. If neopets needed to neomail everyone, they could do it on the system or just put it in the news section. Neopets has repeatedly said that such posts either on chats, trading posts, or through neomail will NOT get you anything other than a frozen account! This is against the rules and will automatically get your account frozen and no hope of getting it back!

GuestBook Scams - Someone will make a post like this: 'I just made a website, please sign my guestbook' but when you go to the link they post, it will ask you for your password. Neopets recently created a Guestbook warning banning people from promoting their guestbooks (se the 'Warnings' section for details) partly because of the scammers and partly because you should always be careful about how much information you give out online.

Falsely Priced Shop Items - The scam involves putting a cheaply priced item on the shop wiz, or, more usually, several of one such item. The best example was with Lu Codestones being priced at about 1,700np. When you get to the shop, the price has been changed, with an extra digit added, so an item costing 1,700np is now 17,000np, and one at 1,211np is now 12,111np. It's very easy to miss that extra digit and lose a lot of neopoints. Too many people have been burned by this so be sure to watch those prices closely before you buy.

"Make me your neofriend and I'll tell you a secret/give you a cheat" - The scam works like this: "If you make me your neofriend and buy an item from my shop, I'll tell you a million np cheat". Well guess what? There are no million dollar cheats for NeoPets. Usually if you fall for this scam, you will end up buying something just to get the cheat, then the scammer either "makes up" the cheat themselves or takes your np and ignores your protests. There are no ways to get rich quick in NeoPets. Accept it and move on.

"This website can make you millions!!" - There are all sorts of website scams. Someone will post their scam website -- and it may even look legit -- until you sign their guest book and it asks you for passwords. They will say anything to lure you to their scamsite: "I have the Cheat for Coltzan's Shrine, The Wishing Well, The Hidden Tower" or "OMG, I didn't believe it, but this site gave me 100,000 NP!" Lies, lies, lies. They all either ask for your password or to change your e-mail address to their e-mail address. Don't ever fall for it.

"Go to my Website to learn how to duplicate items/NP!" - Most of these websites will ask for passwords, but some sites really will have what they call "refresher" programs, hunter-seeker programs or duplicating programs. First of all, most of these programs do nothing but give your computer a virus. And even if you do get a program that does duplicate your items, all your accounts will be frozen as soon as you use it. NeoPets have special programs *just* to catch people with duplicated items. Quote from NeoPets: "NeoPets can see your posts, your neomails, your trade wish lists...and we can see if you are duplicating items. All your accounts will be frozen if you do this."

Players Pretending to be NeoStaff - You may get a neomail from someone claiming to be NeoPets Staff, they'll say you've won a prize, there's a virus in your account, or a database crash, etc... Then they'll say that they need to verify their records and ask you to neomail them back with your username and password. This is just another attempt to steal your account. Just remember that NeoPets will never ask for your password!! They have no need to as they can look up your account anytime they want. When in doubt, look up their user's profile. If they are NeoStaff, you will see this at the bottom of their profile in big red letters: "****** is a Neopets Monitor - This means that they are entrusted with looking after the site, and given the power to delete messageboards and noticeboards"

"I'm Selling My Account!" - Beware of people selling their accounts. It's usually just a scam to get you to take their trades or auctions. Quote from Neopets: "You may not sell, trade or buy a NeoPets account or Pets for Neopoints, money, NeoPets' Items, or anything else."

"Let's Share Accounts" - Hmmm ... let's not. Sharing accounts means you have to share your password. Once you do that, you run the risk of getting everything you thought was yours stolen. Quote from NeoPets: "Do not ask people to share an account with you, or offer to share yours. Do not ask or offer passwords either. This almost ALWAYS winds up with someone losing items or NP." No matter how trust worthy a person may seem when you chat to them online, never give them your password. There is no need to share an account with anybody, if you do it is at your own risk and you must understand that they can easily change the password and steal your account.

Neositting - Someone advertises either on the NeoPet chat boards or else in their Trading Post wishlist. They'll ask if you can sit for their pets, but just for safety precautions, they'll need your password too. Quote from NeoPets: "Neositting is only a scam to try to gain other people's passwords, and it is not permitted. Never ask for a neositter, and NEVER give out your password for any reason."

Fake Login Pages - Scammers who know HTML will often create fake login pages or fake shop pages to fool people into logging in their passwords. They usually pop up in shops, (though I have seen them elsewhere on the site as well.) If it's a fake login page, it will look like the real NeoPets login page, except that the web address will not be "http://www.neopets.com/loginpage.phtml" . A fake shop page will look like a normal shop, but it will usually contain some expensive item that is priced at 10np or something like that. When you click on it, the fake item will take you to a fake login page. Any web address that starts with expage, formsite, angelfire, and even geocities are dead giveaways to it being fake. Never ever enter in your details. If you enter your username and password, your details will then be E-mailed to them and they will have full access to your account. If you do by accident, change your password immediately.

Anything that tries to get your information (Account Password or E-mail Password) is called a Harvester. They do just that...harvest info on YOU so they can reap the rewards of your hard work!

Hidden Locations

The Hidden Tower
-
This is where the rich or at least well off go to buy their items. Most objects in here will put a dent into anyone's bank account. But beware...some of the items in here are high priced but have no value. It is always stocked so go run to the wiz and find if it's worth buying in the Tower or from a private dealer.

Smugglers Cove - At the bottom of a cliff in Krawk Island lies a cave, a place where smugglers can sell their ill-gotten gains. Rare items from all over Neopia can be found here, at a price. But be warned, matey -- they only accept dubloons at Smugglers Cove

The Secret Lab - You can only access the Secret Lab if you have completed the Secret Lab Map Quest by getting all nine lab map pieces. You only need to complete the Lab Map once to be able to access the Secret Lab. After that, you can take your pet to the Lab once a day. The Lab Ray can increase or decrease your pets stats, change it's species, color or even it's sex! It's random though, so take your chances.

Fungus Cave - This mysterious cave popped up on Krawk Island Jan 10, 2002 . Since then weird things have happened to pets who bring their krawk petpet there.....

Draik's Nest - If you have a draik's egg, then you can take it to a hidden Draik Nest and see if it will hatch.....

Jelly World Chat Board

The VirtuPets Marketplace

How Can I get a Draik Pet?
You must have 3 pets or less.
You need to have a draik egg in your inventory (search for one in auctions or shops)
Visit the Draik's Nest (be sure to have the draik egg in your inventory or it won't work)
You should see a form that asks you for a pet name. You must choose a Pet name that does not already exist in neopia.
Just as if you were creating a new pet. If you have brought more than one draik egg, it will also ask you which egg you want to 'hatch'.
Click 'Hatch Egg'. If you have done the above steps correctly, a message will appear
at the Draik's Nest page saying: 'There is a loud cracking noise and suddenly your egg has hatched into a DRAIK!!!!'

How Can I get a Krawk Pet?
You must have 3 pets or less.
You need to get a regular Krawk PetPet and give it to one of your pets to play with.
The name you choose for your Krawk PetPet will eventually become the name of your new Krawk Pet , so you must choose a Pet name that does not already exist in neopia. Just as if you were creating a new pet.
Take the Pet who owns the PetPet to the Fungus Cave. (Make sure it is the active pet.) If you have done the above steps correctly, a message will appear at the Fungus Cave asking if you want to feed your Pet some fungus. Say YES.

Protecting your Account

It may not seem like a lot, but by just being aware that if it sounds too good then it probably is !
That will help you, and save you from A LOT of the above scams I've told you about.
Basis things, Don't be too greedy, it will only get you in trouble.
Don't give anyone your details on your account, it will make you lose your account.
What if you run into trouble??

If you haven't broken any of the rules and you truly believe you have been frozen by accident, fill out the Neopets Automatic Submission - Frozen Accounts Form and tell them about your situation. They will examine your account and get back to you as soon as they can. If they are busy, it may take a few weeks, so be patient.
Continue to write them until you hear something, I would say 4 times a week.

Remember:
If you share your computer with anyone , it's possible that someone else has logged on as you and broke some rules under your name.
Just fill out the Neopets Automatic Submission - Frozen Accounts Form if you feel this has happened.

Above all things, BE POLITE ! There are 2 ways to approach the NeoPets Staff:
Rude - Which will get you no where and may even put your other accounts in jeopardy
Polite - Which will get them to listen to your plea and make them want to help you solve this dilemma your in.

January 10, 2005
New Features
Up-dates rule to infractions of Rules (Terms of Service)
Today we are implementing a new way to deal with people who break certain Terms and Conditions. If you break more minor rules, your account may only be SUSPENDED for up to 72 hours (rather than frozen completely). During your suspension you will not have access to any part of your account. After the suspension period is over, your account will be returned to you.
That said, depending on your account history and which rule you break, you could still get frozen immediately (a "suspension" is not "automatic"), and you WILL be frozen for breaking the rules more than once. Hopefully this "second chance" will make things more understandable and fairer for everyone.

We have another new feature going into place today, too. Our monitors now have the ability to "lock" topics on the Neoboards. This means you may see some topics with a lock icon and the reason the topic was locked posted next to them. It'd be a good idea to use these locked topics as a refresher course on our Terms and Conditions so you don't end up suspended or frozen. ;) (Of course, anyone posting topics simply to get them locked will be frozen. Intentionally distracting our monitors from people who are *really* breaking the rules will be not be tolerated.)
